SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Several law enforcement agencies on the Suncoast laced up their running shoes to help raise awareness for the Special Olympics.
After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, officers and deputies carried a torch symbolizing courage and celebration of diversity uniting communities around the globe.
The run is the largest public awareness and fundraising effort for Special Olympics, Ken Roop, the Florida director of the Touch Run, told ABC7.
“We work with 300 agencies across the state. All 67 counties participate in it,” he said.
Today’s runners included personnel from the North Port Police Department, Venice Police Department, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and Sarasota Police Department.
Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities, providing year-round training and activities to 5 million participants and Unified Sports partners in 172 countries.
