Suspect in critical condition after being shot during standoff in Yale - KOCO Oklahoma City

YALE, Okla. —

A suspect is in critical condition after being shot during a standoff after a hostage situation unfolded in Yale.

The Yale Police Department received a call around 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, and officers could hear screaming in the background. Police Chief Phillip Kelly said they received another call that a woman was assaulted, ran out the back door and the suspect was barricaded inside with a handgun and a hostage.

Authorities called a multi-jurisdictional SWAT team and negotiators to the 700 block of East Chicago Avenue. The suspect eventually released the hostage, whom authorities identified as the suspect's mother, and the incident turned into a standoff situation.

Police said after negotiations failed, law enforcement sent in gas three times and then fired shots. The suspect was hit and is in critical condition, Kelly said.

The standoff ended shortly before 3 p.m.

KOCO 5 has chosen not to release the suspect's name at this time before formal charges have not been filed. Police said the suspect assaulted his wife during the incident.

KOCO 5 asked the Yale police chief why the officer shot at the suspect. He said he was not there when that happened, so he doesn't know.

Authorities also have not said if the suspect fired at law enforcement.

The situation prompted Yale Public Schools officials to place the district on lockdown. They said students and staff were safe.
