Suspect who fired shots at law enforcement from car on Turner Turnpike is dead, OHP says - KOKI FOX 23 TULSA

Oct. 9, 2020 - The Kickapoo Turnpike sits just east of Luther and will connect I-44 (the Turner Turnpike) with I-40. The goal is to provide a way for drivers who don’t have direct business in the OKC metro a way to avoid becoming involved in the Oklahoma City areas increasing traffic levels, especially in rush hour times.

OKLAHOMA COUNTY, Okla. — UPDATE (4/02; 3:52 p.m.) — Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) confirmed the suspect who fired shots while driving on the Turner Turnpike is dead.

The incident started around 12:30 p.m. when OHP located a vehicle reportedly being driven by an armed robbery suspect wanted out of Sedona, Ariz.

OHP tried to stop the driver near I-40 and Council in Oklahoma City, but the driver led troopers on a pursuit onto the Turner Turnpike.

According to OHP, the suspect fired shots at troopers while in pursuit and fired from the moving vehicle.

There were several attempts to intervene with tactical maneuvers by law enforcement, but the suspect grabbed a long rifle and continued to shoot at officers.

Troopers tried to engage with the suspect, and according to OHP’s statement, these attempts “continued for some time.”

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the incident and the Turner Turnpike was shut down.

The suspect continued to be aggressive, according to OHP and troopers returned fire. The suspect is dead.

The Turner Turnpike will remain closed for the next four hours while law enforcement continues to investigate.

The Turner Turnpike is closed due to a heavy law enforcement presence.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol currently has the Turner Turnpike westbound at Luther exit, and eastbound at I-35 closed.

They have not said when it will reopen.

Authorities responded to the area Saturday after a report of a man firing shots.

Drivers should avoid the area.
