Teachers critical of Fla. parental rights law haven't 'read the bill,' says watchdog group - KOMO News

WASHINGTON (TND) — HB 1557, the Parental Rights in Education Act, which critics have labeled the “Don't Say Gay" law, has faced backlash from some teachers who have taken to social media to say they will ignore the law. The law outlines what can be taught specifically to kids in kindergarten through third grade.
“I just want to go ahead and state that I would rather lose my job than out one of my students to their families,” Amber Mercier said on camera in a video she posted to social media. “Being a safe person and a safe place for kids that don’t have that at home is one of the best parts of being a teacher, so yeah, I’m not doing it. I don’t know, fire me, sue me, take me to jail. I’m not doing it.”
Erica Sanzi, Director of Outreach for Parents Defending Education, said “dishonest and egregiously inaccurate” messaging on the law is to blame for the criticism from teachers and school officials.
“They haven't actually read the bill,” said Sanzi. “They certainly do feel emboldened. And it seems to me they have a fundamental misunderstanding of the law, and they have a fundamental misunderstanding of their obligations and responsibilities as public employees.”
In Pennsylvania, five school board members were reinstated after a judge vacated his previous decision that they had to be removed after voting in favor of masked mandates. They were initially removed after a parent-led petition argued they acted illegally by requiring mask mandates after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled mandates to be unconstitutional.
“Once the Supreme Court declared that was unconstitutionalwe implored our school board, we asked and asked and begged and pleaded and made comments to let the mask mandate and they refused. When they refused, that is when we made the decision to file the petition,” said Chester County parent Beth Ann Rosica.
“A group of parents that is well informed makes for a formidable army,” said Sanzi. “They were looking at studies, they were comparing with other countries, they were seeing what other countries were doing and they came to the conclusion that the masks in schools were not only not doing what experts were saying they were doing, they weren't stopping the spread and the damage being done to children so far outweighed any potential benefit from the masks.”
