Tempe-based Guidant Law Firm scoops up Mesa-based Brown and Jensen - Phoenix Business Journal - Phoenix Business Journal
A casual game of golf about six months ago has culminated in the merger of two Valley law firms.
Lamar Hawkins, partner and manager of Tempe-based Guidant Law Firm, said that a round of golf with Shad Brown and Scott Jensen of Mesa-based Brown & Jensen led to them deciding to join Guidant.
Jensen is now a partner with Guidant, while Brown is Of Counsel.
"We've been friends for a number of years and I'm thrilled that they are joining Guidant," Hawkins said. "We could provide them with administrative overhead and we had a limited range of estate planning and so now they complete that with probate [expertise] in that arena."

Guidant provides a wide array of business and corporate law services with 13 practice areas from real estate/construction to litigation and intellectual property. The firm had two offices prior to the merger in Tempe and Gilbert, while Brown & Jensen had its main office in Mesa — which it will retain — and seven other small satellite offices scattered around Arizona such as Show Low and Payson that Guidant will now use to meet clients in those areas. Guidant also has a small entertainment law office in Nashville, Tennessee.
Hawkins said the environment for recruiting attorneys is extremely competitive these days, noting that "it's a tough market to find quality people."
Still, he said the firm is very selective in its recruiting efforts and is currently looking to hire one or two more attorneys and fill three more support staff positions in the wake of absorbing Brown & Jensen.
In total, Guidant now has a staff of 22, including seven full-time attorneys.
The first two months of 2022 has seen a flurry of law firm mergers in the Valley as well as more out-of-state firms opening their first offices in Arizona. Among the moves: Fast-growing Minnesota law firm Dorsey & Whitney opened a Phoenix office and lured away several high-profile Phoenix attorneys; and Denver-based law firm Messner Reeves LLP made a further push into the Arizona market by scooping up an employment law practice group from a Phoenix firm.
