Tennessee Valley Authority says federal law forbids power sales to utilities serving legal cannabis businesses - MarketWatch
The Tennessee Valley Authority recently issued a statement saying that federal law prevents it from providing electricity to local power companies that in turn service legal cannabis companies. The TVA's coverage area for wholesale electricity includes three states with legal cannabis: Mississippi, Virginia and Alabama. "This is a complex and evolving issue -- which we've been following closely," said the Feb. 2 statement. The TVA said cannabis remains a Schedule I drug and that federal resources may not be used to facilitate activity that potentially violates federal law. In cases where it's alerted to power companies proving electricity to cannabis companies, "TVA management will make a determination regarding our reporting obligations to agencies that may have proper jurisdiction to enforce the federal Controlled Substances Act," the TVA said.
