Former Shreveport controller accuses mayor's CFO nominee of racial discrimination, violation of law

The former City of Shreveport controller announced Monday at a press conference plans to sue the City for age and race discrimination, and said he suspects the nominated Chief Financial Officer has violated the law.

S. Ben Hebert claims he was fired by Kasey Brown - the interim CFO who the City Council may vote in as permanent on Tuesday - just days after refusing to participate in financial transactions he believes are in violation of state law, and “shortly after” he made complaints of discrimination in relation to not receiving a promotion he wanted.

Hebert said Brown is undeserving of his nomination from the Mayor to be the permanent Chief Financial Officer, and in an open letter to the Council has requested Brown’s confirmation to the position be postponed until an investigation into his allegations has been completed.

The Shreveport Council decided to postpone the confirmation of Kasey Brown to the permanent position of Chief Financial Officer Tuesday afternoon, just hours after being asked to do so in an open letter written by that former employee.

Shreveport council member John Nickelson sent a letter to the Louisiana Legislative Auditor Thursday requesting that state officials investigate the former employee's accusations.

"These allegations from a former member of the city's senior management team are serious and call into question the department's capacity to administer public funds," Nickelson wrote.

Nickelson announced in a Facebook post Thursday night he was stripped of his position as chairman of the City Council’s Audit and Finance Committee and linked it to his request that the city’s finance department be investigated.
