A Chattanooga police officer is recovering from minor injuries after his patrol car was hit while at the scene of a crash on I-75.
The crash Thursday morning was the result of another accident.
A CPD spokesperson told Channel 3, the officer’s marked patrol car had lights activated when it was hit by a passing driver and the officer is expected to be okay.
Officials with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said it’s a situation the state’s Move Over Law was created to prevent.
“The law is designed for anytime a vehicle is approaching a first responder vehicle that’s on the side of the road way, that is requiring the vehicle approaching to slow down and get into the adjacent lane,” THP Lt. Bobby Clevenger said in an interview Thursday.
The incident happened on I-75 North near the Shallowford Road Exit. While the officer at the scene did not require hospitalization for his injuries, according to CPD officials, Lt. Clevenger said it isn't unusual for more serious injuries to be the case.
“There were first responders--a lot of accidents--where they were being injured and or killed throughout our country actually,” Clevenger explained.
Lt. Clevenger told Channel 3 with holiday travel starting to pick up, this incident is a reminder for drivers to adhere to the law.
“That is the law to do it but it’s also the right thing to do. It’s the right thing to be courteous to someone who is on the side of the road for whatever situation it may be. And if you can’t get over, at least slow down and be aware of the people who are on the side of the road there,” he said.
If not, you could find yourself with a citation and a hefty fine. The law now also aims to protect wrecker trucks and stranded motorists who have their flasher lights on.
A CPD spokesperson said the driver in this incident was issued a citation for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
