TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBMA) Three University of Alabama Law School students donated their kidneys to strangers.

Anjelica Mamani, Katrina Smith and Ryne Smith were each inspired to donate a kidney to people in need at the UAB Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Clinic.

ABC3340's Annie Mapp spoke with Mamani about her experience.

"If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference where you literally are saving someone else’s life in a way that doesn’t just save them but also saves their family who is going through so much too, this is that moment," Mamani said.

Each year nearly 35,000 people find themselves on the waiting list for a kidney in America but just 17,000 transplants happen annually. Mamani says that's why she decided to become a living organ donor.

"I imagine just a whole and a complete family who is going through this Christmas celebrating as a family as opposed to grieving a loss, that makes things more special," she said.

Donating a kidney is a process that requires multiple health screenings and some down time according to Dr. Douglas Anderson, Assistant Professor with the UAB Department of Surgery.

"There are people who unfortunately come off the list because they pass or because unfortunately they can’t get a transplant anymore, so we have many people who can benefit from this," Anderson said.

Mamani donated one of her kidneys August 2020 and was shocked to learn two other UA Law students also donated to a stranger at UAB.

"The likelihood that there were three of us in the state of Alabama and all at the same law school, I thought I’d go my whole life without meeting another person that had done the same thing," she said.
