SAN ANTONIO - Governor Greg Abbott is expected to be in San Antonio on Thursday to host a roundtable discussion with law enforcement.

The roundtable is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Deputy Sheriff's Association of Bexar County on Broadway Street. The governor will be joined by the Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw and local law enforcement in the Bexar County area.

We are a little more than six months away from the election for governor, and Gov. Abbott continues to make border security a big campaign issue. In fact, according to a release sent by the governor's office, today's roundtable will be about keeping communities safe.

All of this comes as Title 42 is set to expire in a little over a month. That was the policy that allowed the government to expel asylum seekers because of health concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. With that policy set to expire on May 23, San Antonio and the State of Texas are preparing for a surge of asylum seekers at the border.

Last week, Abbott announced he would send apprehended migrants to Washington, D.C., by charter bus, and will have DPS troopers inspect 100% of commercial trucks before they enter Texas from Mexico.

Over the last few days, Abbott repealed the inspection requirement after coming to an agreement with each governor of all four of the Mexican states that border Texas. These deals required the Mexico side to step up border security enforcement, with Texas ending the inspection strategy immediately.

The charter bus plan became the source of derision after the governor changed his tune by clarifying the migrants had to voluntarily board the buses.

The eighth bus transporting a group of unlawful migrants to Washington, D.C. from Texas arrived on Thursday.
