Despite rampant speculation of Tom Brady reversing his retirement, the quarterback kept his decision to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers close to his chest.

Unlike his retirement announcement, no NFL insiders had the scoop before Brady declared his intentions to play again in a Twitter post on March 13. In fact, not everyone in his family knew of the news long beforehand.

Former Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis went on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” Tuesday, via Audacy’s Logan Mullen, to discuss baseball. When the conversation shifted to his famous brother-in-law, the Greek God of Walks said he only learned of Brady’s decision minutes before the rest of the world.

“It was like a text message on a chain, and then like 15 minutes later I was at somebody’s house and I’m trying to keep it quiet – don’t tell anybody, right? Because I don’t know when the news is coming out,” Youkilis said. “And it was instantaneous news, somebody was like, ‘Hey, your brother-in-law is coming back.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh here it comes.’ And then all of a sudden here come all the text messages and here comes all the stuff of ‘Hey, did you know?'”

Youkilis, who is married to Julie Brady, also told the story of attending his niece’s graduation. With Wayne Gretzky’s son also walking down the aisle, everyone only noticed the NFL and NHL icons despite Youkilis’ .382 career on-base percentage.

“It was Wayne Gretzky and then Tom Brady behind him and then I was behind them,” Youkilis said. “And nobody cared that I was there and it was great, it was so good.”

Perhaps Youkilis can hound Brady next offseason to get a heads up about his intentions for 2023.
