Traction Law in effect for Cottonwood Canyons as rain, snow moves through - KUTV 2News

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — The Utah Department of Transportation put the Traction Law in effect Monday evening as snow began to fall in the canyons and higher elevations.
Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are currently under the Traction Law.
UDOT crews said road conditions Tuesday morning are wet and slushy in the lower canyon and snowy in the mid to upper canyon.
Snow is expected to continue through the day with UDOT saying another four to six inches of road snow is possible for the upper canyon.
The lower canyon is expected to remain on the wet and slushy side as temperatures trend warmer.
When the Traction Law is put into effect it means UDOT is requiring that all vehicles driving through Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon be equipped with approved snow tires or traction devices, including chains.
According to UDOT, the Traction Law is specific to a few critical parts of the highway and is only used during severe winter weather.
They said the law prevents roadways from being blocked by vehicles unequipped to handle the conditions, which improves mobility and traffic.
The law also improves safety by reducing the number of vehicles leaving the roadways.
The Traction Law is used instead of closing roads completely if the conditions allow.
