Tucson Police Department open house to highlight opportunities for women in law enforcement - KOLD
TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - The Tucson Police Department is pushing to hire more women in law enforcement, holding an open house Saturday, April 9, in hopes of hiring more women in the male-dominated profession.
Staffing shortages are a big issue for departments in southern Arizona and across the country. Recruiting Officer Melissa Ayun said TPD is hiring both men and women, but they’re holding the open house to show women they can be in law enforcement, even if they never thought that career path was possible.
“I never saw myself doing this job, and a lot of females you talk to, some have planned it for their life and others have not,” Ayun said. “I think in a male-dominated career, it’s easier for females to see themselves in a job if they relate to the person they’re observing.”
The event is being held at the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Center on Wilmot and East Old Vail roads. It starts at 1 p.m. and ends at 3 p.m.
Ayun said the event is for women interested in being sworn officers and those who would rather be in communications, the records division or another professional field.
“So, if they come out, they may not relate to me, but they may relate to our K-9 officer or one of our emotional response officers,” Ayun said. “It may not even be the interest of the position itself, it might be cultural background, it might be stature.”
Ayun said females of all ages can attend. She said it’s a great opportunity for high school students who might be interested in going to work instead of college. There are entry-level positions available with the city, and high school graduates can utilize the city’s tuition reimbursement to go back to school in the future.
“There’s plenty of females in this department that are extremely successful and very good at this job,” Ayun said. “There’s so many opportunities. We have 28 different special assignments, 25 different detective units. We have the opportunity to promote and do a lot of different things.”
TPD is currently hiring police officer recruits and lateral in-state and out-of-state officers. The process closes May 9. There’s a written test June 4 and June 5 for police officer recruits. The academy would begin in September.
