UF professor named dean of Cumberland School of Law - Birmingham Business Journal - The Business Journals

Grove Hill native and law professor Blake Hudson has been named dean of Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law effective July 1.

Hudson is succeeding Henry C. “Corky” Strickland in the role, who has served as dean since 2014. Hudson is currently the Samuel T. Dell professor of law and director of the environmental land use and real estate law program at the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law.

Search committee members Douglas A. Sweeney, dean of Samford’s Beeson Divinity School, and Judge Karon O. Bowdre, a former member of Samford’s board of trustees, led a nationwide search for the role.

Hudson graduated from the University of Montevallo and Duke University School of Law. He has held faculty roles at Stetson University College of Law, the Louisiana State University Law Center, LSU’s College of the Coast & Environment and the Houston Law Center. He has also practiced law at Baker Botts in Houston.

Hudson has published over 30 articles in legal and peer-reviewed academic journals, 10 book chapters and three books. His research focuses on land use law, policy, planning and natural resource management, including the role of forest management in combating climate change and the implications of land development for sustainable natural resource management.

He also researches how private property rights and government institutions can solve common problems and the roles of federalism and constitutional structure in land use and natural resource management issues.

Cumberland School of Law is recognized as one of the oldest law schools in the country, and is celebrating its 175-year anniversary this year. It was ranked 10th in the nation for trial advocacy by U.S. World News & Report and is fourth in the nation for best quality of life by the Princeton Review.
