Law Day Contest Underway
MIDDLEBURG – Students in grades 7-12 in the Valley can now enter the Union-Snyder County Bar Association’s Law Day Essay and Art Contest. President of the association Mike Piecuch says the deadline is 4 p.m. April 11.
He says this year’s theme is ‘Toward A More Perfect Union – The Constitution in Times of Change.’ Students are expected to address this year’s theme by answering questions such as ‘What does the Constitution mean to you? ‘Why is the Constitution and its Amendments important today?’ and ‘What amendments or changes do you think should be made to the Constitution?”
The winners and runners-up will receive cash prizes and will be honored during Law Day courtroom ceremonies at 4 p.m. in Lewisburg May 5, and in Middleburg May 11.

Essay entries must be submitted via email to [email protected]. Art entries can be submitted to Magisterial District Judge Jeff Rowe’s office at the Union County Courthouse or to District Attorney Mike Piecuch’s office at the Snyder County Courthouse. Cover sheets are required for all entries in order to facilitate blind judging.
Winners and runners-up will be chosen for Snyder County and Union County in each category (essay/art) for each age group. Cash prizes of $200.00 will go to the First Place winner and $100.00 to the Second Place winners.
Submissions for the essay contest may include a traditional essay, creative writing or poetry. Students in grades 7 and 8 cannot exceed 500 words, whereas students in grades 9 through 12 cannot exceed 1,000 words.
Submissions for the art contest can include posters, drawings, paintings, collages or photography and must be original (not computer generated). Original art may be any medium: pencil, ink, watercolor, acrylic, oil, charcoal, crayon, chalk, collage or photography. Art submissions may be no larger than 4 feet by 4 feet, and cannot weigh more than 20 pounds.
