University of Akron, Cleveland State University nix possible merger of law schools - Akron Beacon Journal

The University of Akron and Cleveland State University have ended discussions on a possible merger of their law schools.

In a joint statement Thursday, the universities said the working group examining the possibility of a law school merger was nixing the idea based on stakeholder feedback.

"Many alumni, students, faculty, and others shared with us their strong feelings of pride in both law schools' identity and tradition," the statement read. "While there was widespread support for the idea of innovative programs and collaborations, many expressed concerns about the idea of a combination of the two law schools."

While talks of a full merger are now off the table, opportunities for partnerships will continue.

"The successful program of cross-registration in selected courses between the two law schools, now in its fourth semester, illustrates the potential for innovative cooperation," the schools said.

This story will be updated.
