LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law says it's received a $1 million endowment for its externship program.

The law school said Monday the gift is courtesy of Sam and Lexy Lionel and will establish the Samuel S. Lionel Externship Program.

"The naming of our externship program for Sam Lionel is especially meaningful, as this program gives our students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in the practice of law while also developing valuable relationships with mentors in those settings," Sara Gordon, interim dean of the Boyd School of Law, said in a press release.

Externships are described as elective experiential learning courses that add real-world experience to class work, similar to internships.

Students get to observe and develop relationships with leaders in the judiciary, state and local government, and public interest settings.

The law school says more than 80% of Boyd students take part in the externship program.
