UNLV law students head to DC in support of Ketanji Brown Jackson Senate confirmation - News3LV

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Five UNLV law students will be in Washington, DC in support of the historic nomination of Judge Kentanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.
If confirmed, she’ll be the first Black woman to sit on the highest court.
The students are traveling to the nation’s capital through an opportunity from the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) in partnership with the progressive group, Demand Justice.
“It represents the diversity of—I think it represents America,” said Yadira Santana, a Las Vegas native and third-year law student at UNLV. “And the fact that she's the first. I think it's so vital for us to show our support.”
Santana said she identifies as Afro-Latina, with her mom’s lineage being traced back to Africa. She said an email came through with this opportunity and she jumped on it.
“I see myself in her,” said Santana. “As cheesy as it may sound, it's the American dream for someone to work hard, and for their hard work to be recognized, and to be nominated to the Supreme Court. It shows that anything's possible.”
Santana is flying out Monday with her classmates to take part in multiple events showing support and solidarity for Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation process.
Nina Garcia, one of the other UNLV law students attending, said they’ll be outside on the steps of the Capitol with an event titled “Have Her Back.”
Since UNLV is far from DC, Garcia said they weren’t immediately selected to travel.
“We really advocated for ourselves to be a part of it,” said Garcia. “There's students from all over the nation going so we're all the way over here from the West Coast, but we just felt so strongly about being there that we did everything in our power to make it there.”
Garcia recalled a quote from the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg for why it’s so important to be in Washington, DC for the confirmation hearings.
“She said ‘School children visiting the Supreme Court, they see all these men and one, tiny little woman,” Garcia explained. “And so that to me is just very detrimental to the reflection of our society right.”
The students return Wednesday, but said it’s worth it to take time out of their incredibly busy law school schedule for a historic moment such as this.
“It's just crazy that I can count on one hand how many women have been nominated for the Supreme Court,” Garcia said. “So I see myself and judge Jackson as a woman.”
