Upstate man dies following chase with law enforcement in Spartanburg County, coroner says - WYFF4 Greenville

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. —

A man is dead following a foot chase with law enforcement in Spartanburg County Monday afternoon, according to Coroner Rusty Clevenger with Spartanburg County Coroner's Office.

Deputies attempted to pull over a U-Haul truck around 2:20 p.m. on Asheville Highway near Geddes Street for a traffic violation, according to Lt. Kevin Bobo with Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.

The pursuit ended when the truck pulled into the Villa Apartments near Asheville Highway and John Dodd Road, Bobo said.

According to Bobo, the driver was taken into custody without incident, but the passenger ran from the U-Haul truck.

The passenger was taken into custody in the back yard of a residence on Bondale Drive, Bobo said.

According to Bobo, after his arrest, the passenger became unresponsive.

CPR was administered along with several doses of Narcan until EMS and North Spartanburg Fire Department arrived, Bobo said.

The passenger died at the scene, Bobo said.

The coroner has identified him as Richard Scott Turner, 55, of Cowpens.

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has taken over the investigation.
