NORTHWOOD, Iowa - Before U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson heads back to Washington, D.C. for the resumption of the Congressional season, she's conducting another 22 county tour across Iowa's first district, meeting with constituents in communities from Decorah to Northwood.
Along with state representative Jane Bloomingdale, Hinson met with members of the Worth County Sheriff's Office and Emergency Management, as well as Worth County Public Health as part of a roundtable meeting on Wednesday. Sheriff Dan Fank shared challenges the department is facing, including staff recruitment issues, wages, the rise of catalytic converter thefts, and the need for clarification of how federal funding can be spent on gear, which is rising in cost.
As a supporter of the law enforcement community, Hinson wants to ensure the proper resources are available.
"As a mom to two kids, you want to be safe in your neighborhood and safety and security for our families. We want good people in law enforcement, making sure our law enforcement agencies have the tools they need to not only recruit people, but once they're on the job, to make sure they're happy with what they're doing."
She feels that recent legislation has not done enough to help working families, which is a key priority she wants to tackle this session.
"We want to pay our people more, utility costs are going up. The cost of the gear is going up. When you're fighting this battle of you only have a certain amount of money, but those fixed costs are now higher, that means you can pay your people less. That's one thing that, unfortunately, the direction we've seen Washington go in the last year, they've turned a blind eye to that problem."
Sheriff Fank also discussed Worth County's recent changeover to the Care Connections mental health region, a change that has benefited the county. During her time representing Iowa's 67th House District, she served on the public health advisory council, and championed the revision of the state's mental health regions. She considers the Sheriff's comments as welcome news.
"We need to empower our counties to be able to work together and be flexible. Ultimately, this is a customer service initiative. We want to be providing the mental health services our communities need in a way that respects taxpayers."
