Veterans Can Withdraw Discharge Papers From County Clerk Under New Law - TAPinto.net
TRENTON, NJ — Veterans will now be able to withdraw their honorable discharge papers, commonly called DD-214 papers, from a county clerk’s office in New Jersey. The measure, sponsored by Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo (D-Mercer/Middlesex) and Assemblywoman Carol Murphy (D-Burlington), was signed into law on Tuesday by Governor Phil Murphy.
Veterans have always been allowed to file honorable discharge papers and other similar service paperwork with their county clerk’s office for safekeeping at no charge. Past laws, however, did not say if veterans were permitted to then withdraw those papers at a later date.
“This law clarifies that veterans are allowed to make that request at any time, if they so choose, since there is absolutely no reason they should not be able to do so. County clerks’ offices would then be required to honor the request," said Murphy, who represents Bordentown in the Legislature.
“There has been confusion over whether a veteran is allowed to withdraw their honorable discharge from a county clerk’s office after the paperwork has been filed," said DeAngelo, who serves as vice-chairman of the Assembly Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. "Their discharge paperwork and record of service could prove beneficial to veterans applying for employment, services or benefits related to their service."
A veteran or a personal representative will now be allowed to withdraw paperwork indicating their honorable discharge and/or their record of service from a county clerk’s office at any time.
The law takes effect immediately.
