The Sparks City Council recently approved the purchase of a Virta Law Enforcement Simulator - A tool used to provide officers with virtual interactive scenarios to help them train for real life situations.
With the new training simulator, police will be able to react more efficiently to situations they might encounter on a daily basis.
Kyle Mickelson, a Detective for the Sparks Police Department says "We never know what we're going to be faced with out on the street."
Damon O'Connell, the PIO for the Sparks Police Department explains "When we get sent to a call for service, officers are always doing the what if...what if this happens how am I going to respond, what if this happens how am I going to respond."
Mickelson adds "We have to go into every situation trying to resolve it to the best of our ability to de-escalate and find a resolution for that situation."
The simulator is realistic and can be intense, just like reality can be.
Mickelson tells us "Based on our communication with that scenario it dictates the outcome of the scenario."
Many day to day scenarios are very dangerous for police, and they never know what could be waiting for them out in the field. Unfortunately some situations don't allow for de-escalation.
Mickelson explains "If force is used, we're trying to use the least amount of force possible so we can resolve that with the least amount on injuries to the person, the citizens and the suspect."
The training skills they're learning during these simulations are what they'll be using out on the street.
O'Connell says "And we have to be able to handle a variety of different types of calls, and this simulator offers us that training."
Mickelson adds "It gives those officers multiple repetitions to be able to have firsthand knowledge and second nature when they are in that situation to react almost instantaneously."
Officials say they think the police will be better off now that they are utilizing this tool in their training.
O'Connell tells us "This will allow our officers to do more training all the time, as opposed to waiting for specific types of trainings when they happen in the streets."
Officers say the importance of this simulation overall is practicing to follow all policies, procedures and post standards for their law enforcement in the most efficient way possible.
