'Don't say gay' law poorly written
The recent Palm Beach Post article about “the fake letter” was a riot on two fronts ["Teacher shares why he wrote viral letter on gender," April 6]. First, the letter writer doesn’t seem to realize that what is in it is actually what the LGBTQ people are trying to do - take gender out of ordinary conversation and substitute they and them pronouns and remove mother, father and other gendered titles from the language. He says that would be preposterous if it were true without realizing that it is true!
Secondly, he is right, the law was poorly worded. We don’t want to remove gender from the language. The law reads "Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards." It should read “Classroom instruction on gender dysphoria or homosexuality may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students.”
The teacher also said that he wanted to be anonymous for the protection of his students, many of whom were transgender. I doubt that there are a lot of kindergarten through grade 3 students that are transgender.
