Voices for Children says Wyatt's Law gives parents, caregivers more power to protect kids - nbc25news.com

FLINT, Mich. - Wyatt's Law has now passed both chambers at the State Capitol, and now awaits Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s signature.
If she signs, local child advocacy groups say it will be a significant win for the state.
Voices for Children President and CEO Nyse Holloman says if this bill is passed, it will empower parents because it will give them more ability to protect their children.
Last Wednesday, the Michigan Senate passed Wyatt’s Law after seven years in limbo.
Wyatt's Law is named after Wyatt Rewoldt, a young boy who ended up with a massive brain bleed, a fractured skull, fractured ribs and torn gums at just a few months old.
If this bill is signed into law, it will create a statewide electronic case management system, allowing agencies, like voices for children, to easily access information about convicted child abusers.
Holloman says they have children come in everyday who have been victims of sexual and physical abuse, human trafficking and neglect.
She says this law would put power back into parent's and children's hands giving them further protection.
“There’s a tool not only for their parents and caregivers but for the child to even use, and so one of the things we do in helping kids cope and prepare for stuff...is that we give them different skills and different techniques and tools that they're going to be able to use, and this is one of those tools that will be part of our toolkit,” said President and CEO Nyse Holloman.
Holloman says one in ten children will be victims of child abuse in their lifetime.
But she says this potential law can and will help reduce that number and create communities where child abuse is completely eliminated and eradicated.
In the meantime, she commends the Michigan Senate for passing Wyatt's Law during Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month because she says it shows how the state can enforce preventative measures.
