Washburn University Law Dean Carla Pratt leaving school - The Topeka Capital-Journal
Washburn University School of Law dean Carla Pratt will step down from her position at the end of the spring semester, the university announced Friday.
Pratt will tentatively return to her home state of Oklahoma to serve as the inaugural Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Chair in Civil Rights, Race and Justice in Law at the University of Oklahoma College of Law, pending approval from that state university's regents.
Washburn University president Jerry Farley said Pratt helped the law school cement itself as "a leader in legal education" during her four-year tenure.
“Her strategic vision has helped increase the national reputation of the school, and her enthusiasm for the institution has strengthened the relationship with alumni and the legal community," Farley said in a statement.
Pratt is the second high-level Washburn administrator to announce plans leave the university in the past few weeks. Vice president of academic affairs JuliAnn Mazachek, a career Washburn professor and employee, is also finishing up the spring semester before heading down to Texas to serve as Midwestern State University's next president.
The law school dean had been hired in 2018 after a national search. She helped launch the school's Third Year Anywhere initiative that allows law students in their last year of school to finish their studies with an externship in the location they planned to practice after graduating.
Pratt also led the school as the university fundraised to build a new law school building. The $33 million building, currently under construction on the southeast corner of the university's campus, is scheduled to be completed in December.
Per a university release, Washburn will appoint an interim dean before Pratt leaves, with a national search for a permanent dean to follow.
