'We honor your service and sacrifice': Maine law enforcement pay tribute to Deputy Luke Gross - WABI

Law enforcement agencies across Maine paid tribute Thursday to fallen Hancock County sheriff’s Deputy Luke Gross.

Gross was hit and killed by a vehicle early Thursday after he had responded to another vehicle that had gone off Route 3 in Trenton.

Members of law enforcement escorted his body from Trenton to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta.

Agencies from across Maine posted messages of remembrance and support on social media for the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and Gross’ family.

At a press conference this afternoon, Sheriff Scott Kane remembered Deputy Luke Gross as a professional, and as family.

”On September 23rd, 2021, at approximately 0450 hours, the Hancock county Regional Communications Center received a report of a vehicle off the road on Route 3 in Trenton. Deputy Luke Gross was called out and responded to the scene,” said Kane. “While at the scene investigating, a vehicle traveling northbound on Route 3 struck Deputy Gross, who suffered serious injuries. Despite efforts, Deputy Gross did not survive his injuries.”

“Lucas served as a patrol deputy, and D.A.R.E. officer at the Sheriff’s Office. Luke had a passion for working and helping young people,” said Kane. “Luke was at home working in schools and being with kids. He was a role model, and was highly respected.”

“Luke always had a smile, and was a joy to be around,” said Kane. “He had an outgoing personality, and was willing to lend a hand and help out.”

“We will miss Luke greatly. He was a great addition to our family at the Sheriff’s Office, and a credit to his profession,” said Kane. “The world needs more like Luke in law enforcement and in our communities.”

“Thank you my friend, for all you did. Rest easy, we’ll take the watch from here.”
