Winfield Township paid $14,000 to wind/solar law firm, but no vote to hire exists - Greenville Daily News

A Daily News Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request seeking to clarify when the Winfield Township Board voted to hire a law firm to help with its wind ordinance showed that the township board apparently never actually voted to hire the law firm — although the township has paid nearly $14,000 to that law firm to date.

The township denied the Daily News’ request for a copy of meeting minutes showing when the township board voted to hire Okemos-based Fahey Schultz Burzych Rhodes law firm, as “it cannot find a reference to voting to hire (the law firm) to help with a proposed wind energy ordinance,” Supervisor Phyllis Larson told the Daily News. “Although not in meeting minutes, based on my recollection and discussions with others, I believe the township board had passed a motion related to retaining (the law firm) around August and September 2020.”
