MITCHELL — Ever tried a wing that’s dipped in creamy dill and rolled in potato chip crumbs? Saturday would’ve been your chance.

Mitchell Main Street & Beyond took over the Corn Palace on Saturday afternoon for their annual Wingapalooza event, bringing a variety of traditional and unusual flavors of chicken wings to the plates of event-goers.

Before the doors opened at 1 p.m., a panel of judges got the first crack at wings from six different vendors that entered the contest. Each vendor prepared about 1,000 wings, and each prepared them with between one and three different flavors.

For $20, patrons received 12 tickets, good for one wing each, plus a voting ticket that served as a vote for their favorite.

Booths representing Alvine Law/Pirogues, Coborn’s, The Depot, Moose Lodge, Scoreboard and Team Brock/Poet offered 17 flavors of wings, ranging from Parmesan garlic to Asian inferno.

After over three hours of tasting, the hundreds of patrons put in their votes for their favorite wings.

Ashley Endres, director of Mitchell Main Street & Beyond, the organization behind the event, said she’s glad so many people came to Saturday’s event.

“It was the first time for me hosting the event, and coming off of two years of not having had the event (at the Corn Palace), I didn’t know what to expect,” Endres said. “I was hoping for a decent crowd, and those who did come seemed to enjoy it. I felt like it was a good event with all the other events in the community going on.”

Though official attendance numbers weren’t immediately available, Endres estimated about 500 people showed up — but not all came to eat.

In addition to the wings, Porter Distributors set up a beer trailer, featuring specially brewed beer from Yankton’s Ben’s Brewing. Their Cash Flow IPA and Dakota Thirst honey lager, which were a hit with the crowd, were brewed in celebration of First Dakota National Bank’s 150th year of business.

In addition to the extra consumables, Connect Mitchell set up a ‘wingo’ game, offering Mitchell swag and cash prizes to participants. At two cards for one dollar, the bingo games raised $325 that went back into the pockets of winners. The final game’s winner, who managed to black out their bingo card, won $200.

On the stage was also a round of Chicken Poop Roulette, which raised $1,140 in squares purchased. With a chicken in a cage, event-goers would purchase a square to place a bet on where the chicken would poop.

The winner of Chicken Poop Roulette won $400, while $370 was donated to Mitchell Area Youth Shooters and the same amount funneled back to Mitchell Main Street & Beyond.

“The crowd was all throughout the Corn Palace. (Wingo and Chicken Poop Roulette) was a great thing to bring in,” Endres said. “I don’t know if we’ve ever done bingo games before, but I think that both games were a huge addition.”

Endres said Wingapalooza will return next year, likely in March 2023. For now, Mitchell Main Street & Beyond are gearing up for their Ladies’ Day Out on April 30 and their first First Fridays on Main coming up on May 6.
