Woman Shares Her Experience, Leads Fair Lawn Demonstration Against Texas Heartbeat Law - TAPinto.net
FAIR LAWN, NJ — A local woman who struggled with her own pregnancy led a demonstration against the new so-called Texas heartbeat law at Borough Hall on Saturday morning.
According to an internet summary of the law, "the Texas Heartbeat Act allows any person to sue someone who performs or induces an abortion, or aids and abets one, once 'cardiac activity' in an embryo can be detected via transvaginal ultrasound, which is usually possible beginning at around six weeks of pregnancy."
Danielle Devantier, an area resident, organized the march as part of the National Women's March against the new Texas heartbeat law on October 2.
"My objection against the law in Texas is that most women don't find out they are pregnant until after six weeks," she said. "In my case, I was 13 weeks pregnant when I found out."
"If New Jersey had that restriction, I would have not been allowed to have an abortion," she said.
Devantier said she was "freshly" out of an abusive relationship when she discovered she was pregnant. If she had been under Texas law as it stands now, she likely would not have had choices.
"This is taking away a woman's human right to choose and to have safe and sanitary conditions with medical doctors," she said. "It's our right to walk in and say, 'no, I don't want this'."
Devantier said she was "grateful" for the support she had on Saturday, including from women in local government. "We had a wonderful event, no public disturbance, and we were encouraged by passerbys who honked and hollered for our cause."
Devantier said she ultimately chose to keep her baby, but continues to stand firmly by a woman's right to choose.
"A woman's right to choose is a basic human right."
