Woman Signs Bill Into Law For The First Time In CA History - Patch

CALIFORNIA — For the first time in California's history, a woman signed a bill into law.

Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis signed a bill into state law in Gov. Gavin Newsom's absence Thursday, after Newsom left the state for vacation in Central and South America.

Kounalakis signed an eviction protection measure, which will safeguard thousands of California renters from being evicted. The bill was signed hours before protections were set to expire.

"I remain more determined than ever to ensure that while I may be the first (woman) to (sign a bill into law), I will certainly not be the last. … Today's action will provide additional time to thousands more (renters) who are in the process of acquiring emergency relief."

The extended law will stop people from being evicted from their homes through June 30 as long as they have applied for state assistance.

Kounalakis also signed a bill relating to elections.
