Wood County Commission to seek outside law firm to determine next steps on sheriff - Parkersburg News
PARKERSBURG — The Wood County Commission unanimously voted Thursday to seek an outside law firm that could determine whether the county should seek to remove Wood County Sheriff Steve Stephens from office.
A lawsuit was recently filed against Stephens and the commission by a former deputy, alleging misconduct and inappropriate behavior toward her and another female deputy by Stephens.
Wood County Prosecutor Pat Lefebure could not represent the commission as he and his office work closely with the sheriff and the deputies in the department.
“The information we have right now is only hearsay,” Commission President Blair Couch said. “Based on what we have so far, I think we have a moral and ethical duty to investigate a firm that can handle a potential removal from office.”
Stephens did not attend the Thursday meeting as he was still dealing with illness, county officials said.
