Wyatt’s Law passess state Senate, moves to governor’s desk - The Macomb Daily

The Michigan Senate passed a package of bills Wednesday that includes legislation known as Wyatt’s Law that will help keep serious child abusers away from children.
The law has been pushed for several years by Erica Hammel of St. Clair Shores, mother of Wyatt Rewoldt, 9, who suffered serious, permanent injuries when he was a toddler from abuse by the girlfriend of Wyatt’s father.
“It’s hard for me to believe that after 7 1/2 years Wyatt’s Law is finally making its way to the governor’s desk,” Hammel said after the passage. “Children’s lives are going to be saved because of this legislation.
“I am elated and emotional. I’m very thankful to have had the help and backing of many legislators over the years from (former state representatives) Sarah Roberts and Derek Miller who got this start to the current (state Rep.) Kevin Hertel and his brother (state Sen.) Curtis Hertel who got it across the finish line.”
The bill makes information about convicted child abusers available to parents whose children are in the care of another adult.
Because of amendments in the Senate, the bill requires a concurrence vote in the House before it heads to the governor’s desk, where it is expected to be signed. The House unanimously passed the legislation in December 2021.
